Reduce Onboarding by 2+ Weeks – Pre-Board – Steve Buergey, Owner ClientWon
Your recruiting team has done their job and found great candidates to conduct interviews for your open position. Now the interviews are complete, and you have finally selected your next superstar for the team. He or she has accepted the offer, and the start date determined. If this is like millions of other offers, the date is typically two weeks or more before their first day. Most companies focus on what “they” need to do; including ordering a laptop, setting up systems, getting approvals, etc.
The focus of this article is “what is your new hire doing” during this time? Of course, some take a vacation, finish their current work obligation, or tackle a project around the house. You know for sure that regardless of what “they” are doing over the next few weeks – virtually all new hires will be researching their new forever job! They may consume information from websites, looking at the competition, reading reviews or articles. This effort is potentially helpful for starting in their new role. However, without direction, it could slow down the onboarding process. How is that possible you might ask? What if they are consuming the wrong information or are looking at resources which are outdated? Are they possibly looking at information which could be years old?
What if during these two weeks you give your new hire voluntary homework tied to your onboarding program? During these two weeks of “discovery,” you might be able to remove parts of your onboarding program or streamline it and reduce redundant areas. You could provide a simple platform to share information in smile bites to make that first day amazing and reduce anxiety and increase engagement.
Some tips to create an amazing Pre-Boarding Program:
- Short videos from their key stakeholders (2-3-minute introductions)
- Top 10 Documents to review and download.
- Video introduction by new hire – shared with the entire team.
- On-Boarding schedule – to allow the new hire to know the plan.
- A survey which could ask about hobbies, new hire’s skills, school, etc. and shared with existing team.
- YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn Pages and videos
- Letter or video from the CEO or another senior executive
So, doesn’t it take a long time to create a program like this? NO is the simple answer. First, most of the videos can be done one-time and used for other surveys. Second, there is amazing software available to automate most of these processes. The team at ClientWon has over 15 years Enablement experience and successful deployed Pre-Boarding programs for which have reduced the time it takes to onboard new hires. This program is affordable, simple, effective, and requires very little work on your end.
